BUYERS BEWARE!!!!!

This is a warning to all who are searching for a new puppy from a BREEDER, be it an Alaskan Malamute or some other purebred dog. A purebred dog is a dog that comes with CKC  registration papers. Advertising a dog as purebred means that the dog is registered or can be registered with the affiliated dog club of the country of birth. If the dog cannot be registered but the breeder claims it is a purebred, that said breeder is breaking the LAW under the Canadian Livestock Act and legal action can be taken. The CKC also requires that each dog is identified by tattoo or microchip before it leaves the breeder. A member of the CKC is NOT allowed to breed unregistered dogs, nor are they allowed to sell a puppy for less without papers. If a buyer does not want papers for their dog that does not mean that the dog is cheaper in price, nor should you ever be charged extra for the papers, that too is against the law. HEALTH CLEARANCES Breeders that are concerned about the future of the breed take every precaution before ever deciding to breed a litter. Much time is done on researching pedigrees to make the best genetic breeding choices. They make sure that parents have the health clearances necessary for the relative health issues in the breed. They will at least have done a thyroid panel, have the eyes examined, also the dog will have the hips x-rayed before breeding to make sure that their is no hip dysplasia in either parents. Breeders will be more then happy to show you the OVC or OFA results. With Malamutes the dogs will also have an AMCA #  clearing the dog of a genetic defect called Chrondodysplasia or Dwarfism. These tests are done to ensure that all precaution has been taken by the Breeder, yet the outcome is not a guarantee that there will not be any genetic problems, but they are minimized by doing all that is in a breeder's power.

There is no separate breed called a Giant Malamute. Malamutes come in all shapes and sizes and a Giant is just a large dog that does not fit the breed standard. Many also come with larger health issues.  COLOR There is also no such thing as a rare red Malamute. Red is a color accepted under the standard, just like an all white, a sable, a seal, a black, or blue along with the popular grey. Since we live in a grey and white world many breeders do not aim to breed color, but again all these colors are recognized in the breed standard. COATS Malamute coats also come in different length and because the long coat gene is carried by some, it does produce itself when both parents carry that gene. Long coats or Woolies are also not rare. The coat does in no way affect their quality as a canine companion, it is just a trait that is not bred for.

The reason I am writing this is because on many popular public advertisement sites, people that are just breeding or those that call themselves breeders, because they can, make claims that are not true. Since a reputable breeder spends a lot of time and money to do all they can for the future of the breed, don't expect a puppy at bargain basement prices. If it sounds too good to be true ,it is. Don't buy from a Backyard Breeder or a Pet Store, since the puppies in the store come from Puppy Mills and those from a BYB are just there to make a few extra $$$$$, that is why health clearances are never done because they cost money. The price is also inflated in Pet Stores and the health issues that arise will break your heart and empty your pocket book. Buy from a reputable breeder or if you can't wait and  find it in your heart, adopt a canine companion from your local rescue. If a rescue dog sounds appealing then go to www.malamuterescue.com The Alaskan Malamute Help League.

It is impossible for a breeder to have puppies on demand and most breeders do not breed frequently because when they do a breeding, it is because they want something out of it for themselves, it should not be  to fill a waiting list or puppy orders. Since breeders cannot have a puppy for you on the ground at the precise moment that you might want one, please do not go and rush out and make a big mistake and buy just anywhere, because this new canine companion should be viewed as NON-DISPOSABLE FOR IT'S WHOLE LIFE. All I will add is this, "All good things are worthwhile waiting for."
